Meaning in Life: The Harmony of Nature and Spirit is one of Irving Singer’s works.The author chooses the last two chapters of this book as the material to be investigated in the present translation report,hoping through the translation project and the present report to not only to further build up my practical translating ability,but also to enhance the theoretical understanding of E-C translation.In the process of translation,The author finds that the treatment of English adverbs is an issue that calls for serious probing.Therefore,this report mainly discusses the Chinese translation strategies of English adverbs.In the translation practice,it is also the case that though the translator can often accurately understand the meaning of adverbs in the original text.Due to the great differences in the classification,position and grammar functions of adverbs between English and Chinese,the translation of adverbs into Chinese requires multiple times of consideration.Based on the comparison between English and Chinese,the author summarizes several translation methods of English adverbs,such as sequential translation,word order transformation and word conversion.In the author’s opinion,it is more effective to classify the translation methods of English adverbs from the perspective of comparison between English and Chinese.After understanding the construction of Chinese adverbs,the translators can understand the translation of English adverbs more accurately and make it more consistent with Chinese language logic and its usage habits.This report is divided into five chapters: the first chapter is a description of the translation project,mainly introducing the background and significance of the project.Chapter Two includes three parts: the pre-translation preparation,the translation process and post-translation editing.Chapter Three is a literature review of relevant studies.In this part,the paper firstly compares the Chinese and English adverbs in classification,the positions insentences and functions.On the basis of the comparative study,methods of the dealing with adverbs in English-Chinese translation are summarized.The fourth chapter is the focus of this report.From the perspective of comparative study of English and Chinese adverbs,the writer summed up the translation methods of adverbs,such as sequential translation,change of word order and conversion.In the Conclusion of the fifth chapter,the paper mentions the author’s own experience in the translation of adverbs,and points out the shortcomings room for improvement in the translation project completed.
