This project report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Wetland Glossary. The original text is from the Wetland Environments: A Global Perspective and the Internet websites of the glossaries on wetland study. The entries contain wetland types, hydrology, soil, biology, environment and wetland protection, among others. The content is characterized by coverage of diverse academic disciplines, highly professional expressions and the dual informative and dictionary text style.Since wetland science is at early development stage, there is want for standard translation of many proper terms in China, and some concepts lack the available expressions in Chinese. The author hopes that the translated version may provide a reference for the study of wetland terminology. In the process of translation, the translator noted several prepositions of high frequency in the original text.English prepositions,as function words, play important logical role in sentence. Therefore, accurate comprehension of the logical function of each preposition is crucial in extracting the meaningful information and in choosing the proper expressions in target language. Therefore,it is necessary to apply logic analysis to selected prepositions and make a preliminary exploration on their connotations and logic functions, and consequently propose corresponding translation methods and techniques, hopefully applicable to the translation of similar texts.Guided by logical analysis, this translation project report examines the definitions of terms containing the prepositions of“with”,“off”and“into”from the Wetland Glossary. The logical meaning of each of the three propositions is classified and analyzed to propose the appropriate translation strategies and methods. The preposition of WITH is logically used to indicate various types of associations, the instruments or means,or cause-effect relationship. The proposition INTO demonstrates the directional movement or change of states. The preposition OFF presents the separation of objectsthat are either independent or inclusive with each other.Based on the above prosaic connotations, the author analyzed the logical functions and translation methods on wetland term definitions containing above prepositions. In addition, the author extends to the related verb and proposition allocations and puts forward translation suggestions. It is hoped that the study will provide useful reference for the translation of similar texts.
