This thesis is based on the translation of The New Middle East: What Everyone Needs to Know written by American Middle East historian James L.Gelvin.The book is divided into six chapters,in which the writer presents an overview of the contemporary Middle East, touching on topics including the “perverse results” of the Arab Spring, the Syrian civil war,the rise of ISIS and other jihadi groups, the influence of external participation and intervention on the Middle East region. So far, there is no Chinese version found on the Internet.According to the supervisor's recommendation and personal interest, the translator chooses chapter 4 and chapter 5 to write the translation report. The fourth chapter introduces the course of the development of the terrorist organization ISIS,the reasons for its rapid rise, the influence of the ISIS on the situation of the Middle East, and the future development of ISIS.The fifth chapter describes the international relations of the New Middle East, including the changes of US strategy in the Middle East under Barack Obama, the relationship between the United States and its partners in this region, the importance of oil to the Middle East, and conflicts between countries in the Middle East. These two chapters involve many historical events, professional terms and difficult sentences. In the whole process of translation, the translator is based on the characteristics of the text, according to the differences between English and Chinese, follows the theory of functional equivalence and combines specific translation methods to translate the fourth and fifth chapters of The New Middle East: What Everyone Needs to Know.Through this translation practice, the translator has benefited a lot.First of all,the translator had a deeper understanding of relevant professional knowledge, which expanded her scope of knowledge.Secondly, the translation practice also deepened the translator's understanding of functional equivalence theory and improved her ability to apply theory to practice. Finally, through this translation practice, the translator also realized her lack of professional knowledge and bilingual conversion ability, and made clear the direction of future efforts.
