Gentlemen are local elites who manage local affairs with local governments.They are special groups with cultural,political and cultural characteristics.This paper takes Liu Shaoguan,a gentry of Pingyang,as the object of investigation,and takes his Diary of Liu Shaoguan Based on the core historical data and the "unprecedented changes in thousands of years" experienced by China at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century,this paper explores how Liu Shaoguan,a local gentry representative,adapts to social changes and changes with social changes,then acts on Wenzhou society,and even promotes the social transformation of modern Wenzhou.By sorting out the relevant contents of Liu Shaoguan's Diary,combining with the local literature and historical materials,and using the method of literature research,this paper systematically and comprehensively analyses all aspects of Wenzhou's social transformationfrom the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China.At the same time,it actively excavates the historical value of personal diaries written by modern historical figures,explores Liu Shaoguan's life world,explains his role as a representative of modern local gentry and vulgar individual in local society,highlights Liu Shaoguan's family and national feelings,and embodies his social value to the construction of his hometown and even to the process of Wenzhou's modernization.
