A Report On The Escort Interpreting Of B2B Matchmaking Meetings In The 12^th EU-China B&T Cooperation Fair

With the in-depth development of economic globalization and continuous advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative,the economic cooperation between China and European countries is getting increasingly closer.As a significant platform for scientific,technological,economic and commercial cooperation between west China and EU?European Union?member states,EU-China Business and Technology Cooperation Fair?referred to as“EU-China B&T Cooperation Fair”?plays a more and more vital role in promoting economic and technological exchanges and cooperation between west China and European countries.On October 26^th,2017,the 12^th EU-China B&T Cooperation Fair was held in Chengdu.B2B Matchmaking Meetings,one of the highlights of this fair,gave the author an opportunity to work as an escort interpreter and provide interpreting services for both Chinese and European enterprises.Escort interpreting,as a common form of interpreting,often requires interpreters to respond quickly and accurately to achieve the purpose of interpreting in a limited time,without or with little assistance of auxiliary tools like notes.According to Skopos Theory proposed by Vermeer,translation is a purposeful cross-cultural communication activity and the intended purpose of target text determines translation methods and strategies.Therefore,Skopos Theory plays an important guiding role in escort interpreting.Taking this escort interpreting practice of B2B Matchmaking Meetings in the 12^th EU-China B&T Cooperation Fair as case study,this report explores the application of various interpreting techniques and methods under the guidance of three rules in Skopos Theory.Combined with specific examples,this report analyzes difficulties encountered in this practice,including unknown terminology,information loss,language redundancy,the interpretation of Chinese culture-loaded words and inappropriate speakers'manner.Then in light of three rules in Skopos Theory,solutions such as enquiry,amplification,omission,transliteration with annotation and adjustment are employed to solve the above problems.Through this practice,the author deeply recognizes that the three rules of Skopos Theory have a good guiding effect on escort interpreting,and hopes this report can provide some reference for escort interpreters.
