Since English became a universal language of the world,the importance of English learning is obvious.“Without grammar very little can be conveyed;without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”,said linguist Wilkins,showing the importance of vocabulary to English learning.The requirements on English vocabulary learning in the primary school stage are not complicated.The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2011revision)required that students in primary school stage should master 600-700 words and 50 idioms.The goal of vocabulary teaching is very clear though,teachers still have some problems in the process of vocabulary teaching.So,how to make English vocabulary teaching more effective became a problem that must be solved.Therefore,the strategies for improving primary English vocabulary teaching were studied in this article.This article is divided into six parts.Part one: introduction.This part includes the background of the question proposed,literature review,research purpose and significance,research ideas and methods,research emphases and difficulties and innovation.Part two: the definition of primary English vocabulary teaching.It includes the nature of primary English,the concept of primary English vocabulary and primary English vocabulary teaching,the characteristics of English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.Part three: investigation on the current situation of primary English vocabulary teaching and the influencing factors of English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.By means of questionnaire among students and interviews with teachers,it was found that teachers have the following problems in vocabulary teaching: wrong teaching attitude,simple teaching methods,lack of guidance on how to learn English,substandard professional qualities,underutilization of teaching resources.And the problems of students in vocabulary learning include: lack of learning initiative and good learning habits,having difficulties in words reading and spelling,simple learning methods.The factors include teacher factors,student factors,school factors,and family factors.Part four: the basis of improving strategies for primary English vocabulary teaching.This part mainly expounds the theoretical basis of improving strategies for primary Englishvocabulary teaching,including constructivist theory,information processing theory and second language acquisition theory.Part five: the improving strategies for primary English vocabulary teaching.Aiming at the problems of teachers in primary English vocabulary teaching,four major strategies were put forward in this part: guidance strategy,evaluation strategy,teaching strategy,and resource strategy.Part six: conclusion.This part summarized the research on primary English vocabulary teaching,pointed out the shortcomings in this research and proposed potential research directions in future.
