A Report On The Translation Of Confucius & Confucianism: The Essentials(Excerpts)

This paper is a report based on the completion of a non-literary task.The original text is the first six chapters of Confucius & Confucianism:The Essentials published by Wiley Blackwell and authored by American sinologist,Lee Dian Rainey.The book focuses on Confucius and Confucianism,expounds the development of Confucianism in various periods and the process of opposition,development and integration with various schools,aiming to give readers a more detailed understanding of Confucius and Confucian culture.The original text is an introductory text.The overall difficulty of the language is moderate,but there are many long and difficult sentences and professional terms.Based on the text type,the translator tries to use Peter Newmark's communicative translation strategy to guide the translation practice.Under the guidance,different methods of translation are applied in the practice,they are word order adjustment,long sentence segmentation,part-of-speech conversion,addition and free translation,to analyze and discuss the difficulties in translation from three levels: lexical,syntactic and discourse translation.There are four chapters in this report: the first chapter is mainly about the introduction of the background information,the significance of translation project and analyses of the content and features of source text;in the second chapter,the procedure before translation is presented,including translation tools,theoretical support,translation plans,quality assurance and the establishment of terminology database;the third chapter is case analysis,which illustrates the difficulties in translation and how to solve them by adopting appropriate translation methods under the guidance of translation theory.The last chapter is mainly about the reflections on the translation practice,which consists of lessons learned and the problems to be solved.
