Comparison And Analysis Between Chinese And Ukrainian City Names

Since ancient times,people have been very interested in naming places.The writings of Greek and Roman historians and geographers have begun to try to explain some place names-toponyms.The history of the geographical names' formation reflects the development of human cognition and the evolution of human attitude towards the world around us.Toponyms are both a linguistic and cultural phenomenon.The place name discipline,toponymy,studies the origin,meaning,word characteristics,evolution and distribution law of the toponyms and their applications,and has a natural and inseparable connection with geography,linguistics,history,ethnology and cartography.This thesis is based on the study of city names in both Chinese and Ukrainian languages.It strives to explore the way of word formation and naming of toponyms in each language by comprehensively collecting,sorting and summarizing a large number of documents.Besides,this paper analyses the cultural meaning and social functions of Chinese and Ukrainian toponyms in detail.This thesis is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction,which introduces the significance and purpose of the research,current research status,research methods and research objects.The second part is the theoretical basis,which mainly introduces the generation of toponyms,the concept of toponyms and their characteristics.In addition,this part compares the word formation of city names in Chinese and Ukrainian languages.The third part makes an in-depth discussion and comparative analysis of the naming methods and principles of city names in Chinese and Ukrainian languages.The fourth part reveals the cultural characteristics of Chinese and Ukrainian city names from the standpoint of psychology and culture;it also explores the cultural connotations of religion,psychology,history and politics accumulated in city names.The fifth part is the conclusion for research content and results.
