Focusing on Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, this thesis mainly conducts a detailed interpretation and comment on his language thoughts. As the word “idea”,which is an essential clue for understanding Locke's language thoughts, runs through the whole book, the thesis first interprets Locke's theory on idea;then discusses his primary language thoughts including words, names, propositions, truth, and the relationship between language and reality;analyzes the influence that Locke's epistemology, the theory of ideas, the theory of names, the theory of propositions have on later philosophers and the deficiencies in his language philosophy so as to point out that the Locke's philosophy of language has laid a foundation for modern philosophy of language.
