Every image that Chen Hongshou created with his brush,from bizarre rocks,rusty ancient whose time of origin is unknown to intertwining tress that have witnessed the vicissitude of time,seems to reveal the painter's pursuit for eternity that could last through thousands of years rather than for momentary magnificence.The painter,who lived through the turbulence of the turn from Ming to Qing dynasties,no longer focused on the rise or decline of things on the superficial level.Instead,he saw the nature of the world through the varieties of appearances they took on.“Once damaged,the physical body will perish,but what's inside will remain.” This is the essence of Lao Lian's paintings which are characterized by elegance and primitiveness.Breaking the limitation of time and space,they give viewers a sense of eternity that transcends the boundary of time and reality.Lao Lian has created many works in his life,and he is best known for his figure portraits,followed by bird-and-flower paintings,while his landscape paintings remain largely unknown.Actually,his landscape paintings is a unique manifestation of his belief in “elegance and primitiveness”.If applied to the creation and innovation of modern landscape paintings,it will nourish the birth of brand-new expression techniques and set a new developmental path for the Chinese landscape paintings.Starting from an interpretation of the scene,this paper explores Chen Hongshou's landscape paintings from the paintings themselves,including the strokes,ink,shape and picture composition on the basis of analyzing existing research on the painter's historical background,characters and life experience.By combining academic and practical research findings,this paper aims to contribute to the diversity and complexity of the study of Chen Hongshou's paintings and provide a new interpretation on how to extend the study in modern times.
