The detective novel, also known as detective mystery novel,is a type of novel that mainly describes how the mystery case happens and the process of reasoning the case.In foreign countries, the detective novel is one of the most popular genres in popular literature. It is not only sought after by the majority of adult readers, but also attracts the attention of a large number of young readers. However,in China, the quantity of juvenile detective novels is few,and the quality of juvenile detective novels is also uneven, far from meeting the reading needs of young readers. Therefore, the author chose the Nancy Drew series as the translation material for this translation practice. This series was born in the 1930 s,and the main story happened around the mystery cases solved by a teenage girl detective——Nancy Drew. The novel is deeply loved by foreign young readers because of its vivid character description and exciting plot setting. However, this series is still not published in Chinese. In view of the few translation standards that can be used to translate such novels, the author attempted to use the principle of equivalent effect as a guide in the translation process. It is intended to enable the target reader to obtain as much information as possible as the original reader,as well as get the same feeling as the original reader. After that, the author wrote a translation practice report based on this translation experience. The full text is divided into five parts: the first part is the introduction, which introduces the background of this task, the significance of this task and the structure of the thesis. The second part describes the author’s preparation work for the translation, the execution process of the translation and the proofreading process. The third part is a review of the text, including an introduction to the text, main contents of the text and some analysis about the features of the novel. The fourth part is the domestic and international research of the principle of equivalenteffect and some related case analysis, combining the principle of equivalent effect with this translation practice. It is carried out in three aspects, including the equivalent effect translation of psychological description, the equivalent effect translation of action description and the equivalent effect translation of language description. The last part is a summary of this translation practice.
