The use of abstract nouns is one of the characteristics of the English language. The abstract nouns have a strong generality of meaning, which is obviously reflected in the academic language education texts.Taking Child’s Talk: Learning to Use Language as the translation material and starting with the concept and classification of abstract nouns, this report proposes and summarizes different translation strategies for different types of English abstract nouns.Through the study of previous studies and this translation practice, the author has realized that the differences in sentence structure and thinking habits between English and Chinese result in the differences in the use of abstract nouns between the two languages. Therefore, taking abstract nouns as the research object has important guidance and practical significance for the translation of abstract nouns into Chinese and other languages. In addition, most of the studies on abstract nouns in English at home and abroad are just brief discussions. Therefore,in order to enrich and extend the study on translation of English abstract nouns, this report analyzes abstract nouns as a single object of study. This report consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 briefly introduces the background, significance and contents of the project.Chapter 2 details the task process, including preparation before translation, translation process and proofreading after translation.Chapter 3 mainly summarizes the concept and classification of English abstract nouns and the difficulties encountered in translating abstract nouns.Abstract nouns are used to represent abstract concepts.By analyzing and sorting out previous studies, the author believes that English abstract nouns can be divided into five categories: inherent abstract nouns, abstract nouns of status, behavioral abstract nouns, quality abstract nouns and compound abstract nouns. Its high generality and abstraction are also the essential reasons for the difficulty of translating abstract nouns.Chapter 4 analyzes and summarizes the translation strategies of different categories of abstract nouns through translation practice, including conversion of words, amplification and subdivision, etc.Chapter 5summarizes the experience of the translation practice as well as the deficiency and the need for improvement. In the process of writing, this practice report adopts three research methods: literature review, case analysis and parallel text comparison.Generally speaking, this report is a relatively systematic, comprehensive and specific translation practice report on the treatment of abstract nouns in the process of English-Chinese translation, which has certain reference value for the study of the translation strategies of English abstract nouns. |
