Henan Opera is a popular art in China's central plains and the external publicity of Henan Opera culture is of practical significance. However, most of attention goes to market-oriented translation studies while Chinese traditional operas will stay in the shadow of decline for a long time to come.As a result, few achievements of translation studies in this field have been reached.Based on the translation practice with Overview of Henan Opera Culture(Excerpts)as the source text,I try to explore relevant translation principles to enrich the research results, hoping to facilitate the publicity of Henan Opera culture.I choose the first section Henan Opera,Henan Bangzi and Tubangxi of Chapter? The Origin and Evolvement of Henan Opera and the second section Stage Performance of Henan Opera of Chapter ? The Art Form of Henan Opera as the source text. From Bhanha Homi' s cultural translation perspective, based on the concept of hybridity,I explore the principles of how to handle the “degree” in hybrid translation through case analysis from lexical and syntactic levels. In lexical level,I mainly explore the methods of translating jargon,culture-loaded words, appellations and four-character phrases.I adopt the skills of literal translation, transliteration with annotation and transliteration with literal translation etc.under the guidance of foreignization strategy and free translation, substitution and paraphrase etc.under domestication;in syntactic level, after analyzing the sentence patterns of Chinese and English,I deal with parataxis sentences by splitting and combining sentences and readjusting their sequence under the guidance of domestication strategy. In terms of parallel sentences, while taking the reader's acceptance into consideration,I try to retain the rhetoric devices in the source text.I make a point in the report that both domestication and foreignization have their own merits and demerits in cultural translation and the choice depends on the particular cases with several factors considered, including text feature, the translatior's translation purpose, the author's writing purpose and receptivity of readers.Adopting foreignization by retaining theheterogeneous factors is an irreversible trend. However, the translator should not go too far because only the moderately hybridized translation can achieve the ideal effect in cultural export. It has always been tough to achieve accurate and effective transmission of cultural information. In the translation practice, with the aim of exporting culture I try to produce ideal hybrid translation, which possesses the advantages of both English and Chinese. On this basis,I explore how to handle the “degree” in hybrid translation. The conclusion can be helpful in solving the difficulties to be encountered in translating the texts on the subject of Chinese traditional operas and can be used for reference in translating the texts with Chinese local operas as the theme into English, which will serve to facilitate the overseas publicity of Chinese traditional opera culture.
