Education has a profound impact on its comprehensive national strength such as economy,politics and culture.And family education is the bedrock of the whole education system.Family Education by Chen Heqin was published in 1920 s,when China was politically weak,militarily disintegrated and socially chaotic.In this context,a number of well-known ambitious educators initiated many advanced education thoughts and concepts with Chinese characteristics.Nowadays,education is increasingly valued all around the world.So the translation of Family Education will facilitate the inheritance,exploration and development of Chinese education thoughts as well as the output of Chinese culture.This thesis is a translation report of Family Education.The third chapter of which “Basic Rules of Family Education” is selected as translation text.In the light of translation stylistic it discusses the translation strategies for the persuasive utterance that is a conspicuous feature of cultural texts.With the feature of both informative and vocative texts,Family Education has abundant persuasive utterances that are the best demonstration its style and linguistic features.Hence,it is of great importance for the translation to convey such persuasive utterances appropriately.As the different mindsets and values produce as well as represent differences in the patterns of persuasive utterances in Chinese and English.This thesis focuses on how to convey the persuasive utterances in the target text while maintaining the style of the source text at the meantime.As a speech act,persuasive utterance is a directive and face-threatening act.Such issues as social power,context and condition of the “hearer” should be taken into consideration.Persuasive utterances are divided into the ones with modal verbs,conditional persuasive utterance and suggestive persuasive utterance through analysis and study.This report focuses on the issues of these persuasive utterances and related strategies of appropriateness,equivalence and deviation in the English translation to successfully transmit the information and style of the source text in the target text.Based on the translation process and case analyses,this report aims to sum up some strategies and methods for the C-E translation of persuasive utterances,hoping to provide some references for translation and research of similar cultural texts.
