Abstract/Summary:
Borges is a world-renowned writer. He built a literary hall with his extensive cultural and philosophical ideas. The images in his works are shining stars in his literary hall.On the basis of Borges’ life experiences and his own views on literature, this paper comprehensively and profoundly classifies the images in his works, especially in his novels and poetry. The main part of the article is divided into four chapters. The first chapter explores the image writing of Borges and analyzes the characteristics of his image writing. The appearance of the world is perishable,so Borges used images to write the world.Just like the world,Borges’ images are unrealistic, mysterious and polysemous.Based on the universal characteristics of Borges’ images and the specific meaning of each image, the article classifies the images in his works into three categories: "historical images","survival images" and "epistemological images".The second chapter studies the "historical images" in Borges’ works which consists of the image of dagger and the image of ruins. The historical images present the development and reconstruction of history and culture, and reflect Borges’ reconstruction of literature.Borges used the dagger to pierce the status quo, achieve self-transcendence,discover new history "sprout" in the ruined world and build a new literary order. The third chapter studies the "survival images" in Borges’ works which consists of the image of the clock, the image of sunset and dusk and the image of the grocery store. In connection with the human’s survival situation, this chapter studies the problem of existence elucidated in the images in Borges’ works.Borges believed that time is the biggest survival mystery, and people are experiencing various emotions in the time cycle to realize the experience of the world. The image of sunset and dusk reflects the writer’s living state in various emotional vortexes, and the image of grocery store represents the disorder and change of life. The fourth chapter studies the "epistemological images" in Borges’ works which consists of the image of book and library, the image of mirror.Borges realized his understanding of the world through books, and recognized humanity,excavatedself-consciousness through mirrors. The image of epistemology in Borges’ works played an important "media" role in the process of understanding and communicating with the world. In Borges’ works, the possibility of all things contained in knowledge is reflected. The images in Borges’ works contain the writer’s thoughts about the survival and development of human and the construction of literature. With those images,Borges expressed the experience of complexity and diversity of the world and recorded the "chaos" and "brokenness" of the real world.
