Abstract/Summary:
Adverbial exist in both Chinese and English as a sentence constituent, but Chinese adverbial can only be preposed, the modifier which be postposed are called complement;English adverbial can be preposed or postposed, but no matter where it is in the sentence,it is always called adverbial. Therefore,Chinese adverbial is a difficulty for English-speaking Chinese learners and also a base for promoting oral Chinese.Aiming at this problem, this thesis is based on the "three plane grammar theory",with the "English-Chinese contrast theory" and "topic focus theory" and other theories to compare Chinese and English adverbial.First of all,the investigation of the position of Chinese adverbial and complement will be based on the semantic function, and we will analyze which kind of words can only be adverbial, which kind of words can only be complement, and which kind of words can be both adverbial and complement.Second,we will investigate the position of English adverbial and discuss which kind of adverbial that only appear in front of verb, which kind of adverbial that only appear after verb, and which kind of adverbial can be placed in any one of above-mentioned positions. Finally, the author chooses “HSK Composition Corpus” as main corpus and analyzes the adverbial acquisition errors in English-speaking foreign students, then present some relevant teaching suggestions.
