A Study On The C-E Translation Of Beijing Traditional Architecture Names From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Beijing's traditional architecture enjoys a great reputation in the world and attracts many foreign tourists.For foreign tourists,knowing the architecture names is the direct way to understand the culture of Beijing's traditional architecture.Therefore,how to translate these architecture names has become a crucial and profound task.Guided by Skopos theory,translation studies are made on the names of traditional buildings in Beijing's main tourist attractions and some foreign buildings.More than 400 names of buildings in Beijing and abroad are collected.This thesis classifies and tabulates the data according to its source,and analyses the current situation of the translation of the names of traditional architectures in Beijing.It is found that the translation is generally good and there are few mistranslations.However,some problems of non-standardization do exist in the translation,such as various forms of translation,different English names for the same architecture and non-standard use of Chinese Pinyin.This thesis tries to put forward some suggestions on standardization of the existing problems based on Skopos theory.Besides,this thesis classifies and tabulates the data according to the language structure,analyses the language structure and information contained in the names of traditional buildings in Beijing,and summarizes the translation methods of proper names and general names of traditional buildings in Beijing based on the naming methods of foreign architecture names guided by Skopos theory.Based on the three basic rules of Skopos theory,this thesis analyses the application of Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule and Fidelity Rule in the translation of architecture names in Beijing,discusses whether the current translation meets the requirements of the three basic rules and puts forward some suggestions for improvement.The names of traditional buildings in Beijing appearing in different places have different translation purposes,namely,to help foreign tourists to find buildings,to convey the historical and cultural connotations and to introduce the functions and types of buildings.Skopos theory holds that the purpose of translation determines the translation strategy and requires the translator to choose the most appropriate method and strategy according to the translation purpose.Based on the analysis of the different purposes of the translation of Beijing architecture names in different places,this thesis holds that different translation methods,such as transliteration and "translation couplets",should be adopted according to different translation purposes.The author hopes that this thesis will provide ideas and references for the translation of Beijing traditional architecture names and the architecture names in other areas.
