| Se Enkbayar is a Mongolian composer who studied composition and music theory at the National University of Mongolia. His choral works have been widely acclaimed at home and abroad and have been highly praised.Beginning with Se Enkbayar’s a cappella choral work,Ode to Eight Horses, this thesis discusses the stylistic characteristics, creative background and musical analysis of Se Enkbayar’s works.Combined with what I have learned from my study of conducting,it makes a thorough and meticulous study of the techniques for conducting this unaccompanied choral work, with a view to making a useful exploration of and providing a reference for learning the techniques of conducting. In addition, through the viewing of a select research sample of videos of different choirs singing Ode to Eight Horses, this thesis studies the different treatment by different choruses of the stylistic characteristics of the work in order for the author to better be able to put forward her own opinions and suggestions for the better study of conducting and provide a reference for the research of other scholars. The whole thesis is divided into four parts. The first part summarizes the current existing research regarding Se Enkbayar and his compositions at home and abroad, and puts forward the significance and methods of this study. The second part analyzes the musical characteristics of Ode to Eight Horses, including its harmony, the interweaving of the melody, and so on.In the third part if the study, the author examines the sung version of Ode to Eight Horses, exploring the treatment of its singing techniques by different choirs. The fourth part is the main part of the thesis.Focusing on the conducting techniques employed in Ode to Eight Horses, the design of the conducting hand gestures. It discusses and summarizes the problems encountered during the author’s own rehearsal process of the piece. How to grasp the style of Se Enkbayar’s a cappella choral work and how to lead the chorus to better interpret Ode to Eight Horses is the main highlight of this thesis. At the same time,it also provides a reference for future conductors who need to conduct this piece. |
