Imagery Narration In Yan Geling's Novels

As one of famous writers of overseas Chinese,Yan Geling has created many excellent works so far.Her novels are quite unique in their choice of subjects and ideas,and the use of imagery is a very important feature of her novel narrative activities.In describing the characters and narrative plots,she set up complicated imageries and expressed her unique understanding of the symbolic poetics and narrative aesthetics contained in the traditional aesthetic concept of imagery.This thesis takes imagery as the object of study,collates the meaning of imagery symbolized by Yan Geling in her creation,and excavates the narrative function and aesthetic meaning of imagery in Yan Geling's novels.Through the study of imagery narration in Yan Geling's novels,this paper explores Yan Geling's revelation of theme of human nature.This thesis analyzes the imagery narration in Yan Geling's novels from three aspects.The first part,from the perspective of narratology,classifies and analyzes a large number of imagery that appear in Yan Geling's novels and analyzes the symbolic meaning contained in these imageries.Yan Geling's novels are very rich in imageries.With reference to Mr.Yang Yi's division of imageries,the imageries in Yan Geling's novels are divided into two categories: natural imagery and cultural imagery.Among them,natural imagery include animal imagery represented by dog,donkey,and snake;Plant imagery represented by sunflower,rose and pear flower;The color combination imagery represented by red clothes and grey shoes.Cultural imagery include boby imagery represented by breasts,feet,and hair;Space imagery represented by basements,attics,castles,and prisons;Reconstruction based by myths.These complex imagery occupy an important position in the narrative structure of the novel.The second part,analyzes the functions of the imageries appearing in Yan Geling's novels: dredging the context and penetrating the narrative structure;echoing the characters to sublimate the theme of human nature;and building a sad atmosphere.As the “literary eye” of the novel,imagery carry many narrative functions in the novel.These imageries written by Yan Geling are the important carriers of her novel narration.In the last part,from the aesthetic characteristics of imagery,the author analyzes two aesthetic features of imagery narration in Yan Geling's novels : calm sadness and poetic tragedy.The narration of imagery often expresses the author's many emotional experiences.These narrative imageries used by Yan Geling show her calm and self-control in her bones,and also profoundly reveal the complexity of human nature.
