| Michael Slote’s theory of sentimentalism is one of the most controversial theories in contemporary ethics. The criticism on it is not only from the outside of virtue ethics, such as rationalism,meta-ethics,but also within the circle of virtue ethics. This theory is going to be developed in response to doubts gradually. It regards empathy as the core concept of theoretical construction, and relies on it to develop orderly care and receptivity for others.Slote emphasizes on the motivation of behavior and the character of the person according to empathy, and the moral correctness can be judged from both of them.In his latest research,he introduces the concept of yin and yang in traditional Chinese philosophy, and treats them as the mechanism into the definition of receptivity and rational control, and further enriches the construction of his theoretical system.Slote opens the door to a sentimental world via the organic construction of empathy, care and receptivity, which leads us to explore the mystery between morality and human psychology. This actor-based sentimental theory expands the current development path of virtue ethics and sets up a model for contemporary ethical research. |
