A Study On Jia Hongzhao From The Perspective Of Changing Late Qing Dynasty

Taking Collected Works of Baozhen Studying Room written by Jia Hongzhao,an official of the late Qing Dynasty as core historical data,this thesis discusses the main deeds of Jia Hongzhao's life in the order of time.Jia Hongzhao lived in changing times when the precarious Qing Dynastywas threatened by both domestic trouble and foreigninvasions.Facing the current political situation,Jia Hongzhao,a jinshi(successful candidate in the highest imperial examination held in the palace under the emperor's supervision)was helpless,but he kept the faith that every person has a duty to his country,and tried to do things that were beneficial to the country and the people.During the period of being an official in Yunnan,Jia Hongzhao fulfilled his duty scrupulously,practised diligent government and loved the people,and was clean and honest.He was praised by local people as a honest and clean official.In the face of Hui people's uprising in Yunnan province,brave and resourceful Jia Hongzhao,adhered to principles and successfully handled several Hui people's riots,which won the appreciation from the royal court.Then he was promoted to provincial governor of Yunnan province.However,he was finally dismissed by the court,for he disagreed with Lao Chong'guang who was a governor-general of Yunnan and Guizhou on policy toward Hui people and defied to his superior leaders.When staying at Junzhou idle,Jia Hongzhao was very enthusiastic about local affairs.Once there was something about people's livelihood,he always did his best he can.In addition,while giving lectures at Yunshan Academy,he was also invited by local officials to major County Annals of Yunxian in Tongzhi years and Sequel of the County Annals of Junzhou in Guangxu years.Besides local affairs,Jia Hongzhao also participated in a series of matters concerning the development of Jia family,such as writing biographies ofancestors.He made an enormous contribution to the Jia family of the Junzhou.Living in changing late Qing Dynasty,Jia Hongzhao served as the provincial governor,but he was still a member of ordinary bureaucratsin essence.From Jia Hongzhao,we can find the choices and circumstances of ordinary officials in that changing period,which could reveal the emotions,responsibilities and helplessness of general officials in the late Qing Dynasty.
