Traditional English writing teaching is only the process of learners learning and teachers correcting,which makes learners lose their interest in English writing and makes it hard for them to improve their own English writing ability.Therefore,seeking an effective English writing teaching method that could be used to improve learners' English writing ability,Mind Mapping was proposed by Tony Buzan.It is a kind of visualized thinking tool which displays knowledge hierarchically according to different themes,emphasized points,relevance,etc.It helps in selecting,classifying and organizing information and at the same time building up connections among information,which is beneficial for students to finish writing tasks.Genre-based teaching approach is a popular writing teaching approach which puts emphasis on stimulating learners' interest in English writing,training their writing skills and enhancing their awareness just like get the structure of different genre.This thesis mainly explores effectiveness and feasibility of using Mind Maps in genre-based approach in English writing teaching of a senior high school.The research conducted a 16-week writing teaching experiment by applying the Mind Map in genre-based teaching method in senior high school English writing classroom.The research questions of this experiment are as follows:(1)Can the application of Mind Map in genre-based teaching method improve students' interest and self-confidence when writing?(2)Can the application of Mind Map in genre-based English writing help the students to judge the right genre of a composition?(3)Can the application of Mind Map in genre-based English writing help the students improve their writing performance?The experiment conducted among 86 first-year students from two normal classes of Nanchang No.2 senior high school.The experimental class adopted genre-based approach with the help of Mind Map in English writing teaching,while the controlled class still adopted the traditional approach to teach English writing.At the beginning of the experiment,the author firstly analyzed the writing scores of the first monthly test between the two classes so as to ensure the English writing abilitybetween the two classes are almost at the same level.The author distributed questionnaire(about the students' interest and their concept of Mind Map and genre-based approach)and carried out the reading test(judging different text written in various genre)before and after the experiment in experimental class,had the writing test during the experiment(writing texts in different genre)in both classes.After four months of teaching experiment,the experiment data were collected.The results show that the application of Mind Map in genre-based approach can effectively stimulate the students' interest in English writing.Furthermore,their judgement of different genres of different texts and their awareness of composition framework are also enhanced;However,the study also discovered some teaching difficulties of genre-based approach in English writing class such as how to connect the Mind Map with different genre completely;how to help the students avoid getting into stereotype after they master the framework of the specific genre.In the writing teaching class,teachers should pay attention to the flexibility in the process of using genre-based approach and adjust the teaching process accordingly and spare no effort to inspire students' imagination and logical thinking so as to guarantee the effectiveness of English writing teaching.
