The History of China is a systematic and authoritative book written by Kenneth Pletcher. This book mainly introduces the development of Chinese history and the change of the dynasties for thousands of years. The purpose of The History of China is to introduce Chinese history to the western world, trying to restore and reproduce the colorful and true evolution of Chinese history. From the beginning to the end of the book, the history of the ancient dynasties is presented to the readers, and the politics, economy, geography, taxation and agriculture of each period are further elaborated. This report first introduces the book The History of China and gives a brief overview of the two chapters of the Ming and the Qing dynasties, which are translated into Chinese by the author. This book is a historical text with abundant use of terminology and unique writing style. This translation report first gives a brief introduction to the skopos theory and its three principles, which play a vital role in the process of translation and polishing of language. The case analysis examines how to correctly understand the original text under the theoretical support of skopos theory, and make the appropriate translation of culture-loaded words, proper nouns and illustrative historical information. The translation strategies used in the practice attempt to retain Chinese cultural characteristics and avoid the loss of cultural information. The target readers’ expectations are taken into consideration in the process of translation with the hope of offering a better understanding of the translated text and achieving the ultimate goal of translation.
