Vocabulary is the foundation of language learning and the mastery of English vocabulary plays an important role in English learning. At present, the current situation of English vocabulary in middle schools is far from satisfactory, especially in junior middle schools.Memorizing words mechanically not only makes students lose interest in English learning, but also it reduces the students' efficiency of vocabulary learning.Considering this problem, how to improve the present situation with an effective method has been widely concerned by the experts and researchers.Through collecting and reading a great number of books and literatures, the author summarizes a lot of researches about vocabulary teaching methods and the narrative approach. Also, under the guidance of information processing theory, the author proposes the narrative approach to improve the current situation in junior middle schools. The narrative approach mainly uses narration to design the teaching activities. And the forms of narration include non-verbal narration, little space story, narrative sentence and so on.The purpose of these forms is to help students learn vocabulary in a context. At present, the studies on the narrative approach are mainly in the colleges and senior middle schools, there are few studies in the junior middle schools. Therefore, the author designs a five-month teaching experiment to study the application of the narrative approach in English vocabulary teaching in junior middle schools. Here, the author proposes three research questions.(1)How can the teacher apply the narrative approach effectively in vocabulary teaching?(2)What are the effects of the narrative approach on students' vocabulary learning?(3)In what aspects does the narrative approach have a great effect on student's vocabulary learning? The author chooses two parallel classes of Grade Seven in the Experimental Middle School in Huaiyang County,Henan Province. And the author also collects the relevant data and information through the experiment, questionnaire and interview. Before the experiment, the author uses the test to ensure that there is no significant difference in English vocabulary between these two classes. And while the experiment, the narrative approach is carried out in the experimental class and the traditional method is conducted in the controlled class.Meanwhile, the author is the teacher of these two classes and the teaching materials are the same. After the experiment, the author also uses the test to check whether the narrative approach is efficient or not.In addition, the author uses the questionnaire and interview to examine students' attitude toward the vocabulary learning and the narrative approach in the experimental class. Finally, the author uses SPSS20.0 to analyze and discuss the data collected from the experiment. In the end,the results of the experiment show that the narrative approach is feasible and effective. The main effects are that students' English scores have been improved a lot to some degree and students can learn the vocabulary more actively and willingly.Besides, the scores in the words-spelling and the application of the vocabulary have been improved too.The author also finds that in the process of the teaching,it should be considered with the actual situation to ensure that the narrative approach can be implemented effectively.
