A Study On The Effects Of Different Vocabulary Presentation Modes On English Vocabulary Learning In Junior Middle School

Vocabulary plays an important role in English learning.Especially,Junior middle school is the key period to lay a foundation for English learning and most of the vocabulary learned during this period is the core vocabulary.However,the single method and high forgetting rate are common problems in middle school students’ English learning.This paper aims to explore effective presentation modes and study how to improve the vocabulary memory effect of middle school students through effective presentation modes.Based on Information Processing Theory,Cognitive Development Theory,Elaboration Theory and Memory Theory,this study tested different effects of three kinds of vocabulary presentation modes(glossary presentation,example sentences presentation,image presentation)on junior middle school students ’ English vocabulary memory through experiments.The research questions of this paper include:(1)In junior high school English teaching,what are the frequently used vocabulary presentation methods?(2)which presentation mode is the most effective in the immediate-memory test among glossary presentation mode,example sentences presentation mode and image presentation mode?(3)Which presentation mode is the most effective in the delayed-memory test among glossary presentation mode,example sentences presentation mode and image presentation mode ? 120 junior middle school students were selected as the subjects in the experiment,three teachers adopted three different vocabulary presentation methods to present new words.120 students were divided into three classes and every class adopted one of them.This paper chose ten target words that come from the PEP Edition,Grade eight,and test time is 15 minutes.This experiment began in November.That’s to say,after the mid-term,the experiment was carried out.This paper adopted the short-term memory test and the long-term memory test.After the vocabulary presentation,the short-term memory test was performed.After one week,the long-term memory test was performed.At last,the experiment’s data was statistically analyzed.According to the results of the questionnaire survey,the most commonly used vocabulary presentation mode in junior high school English vocabulary teaching is the glossary presentation mode,the next one is example sentences presentation mode,and the last one is image presentation mode.In short-term tests,there is no significant difference among three vocabulary presentation modes,that is to say,three vocabulary presentation modes make no difference on students’ short-term vocabulary memory;In long-term memory tests,three vocabulary presentation modes have significant difference.Example sentences presentation is the best,the next one is image presentation,and the last one is glossary presentation.
