With the deepening of globalization,English language is playing an increasingly important role in international exchanges.Accordingly,to implement the national strategy of Chinese culture "going out",English should be regarded as an important medium. At present,a great number of Chinese classical literary works that were translated into English are not widely accepted in the English-speaking world. The reason for this situation,to a certain extent, has to do with the improperly chosen translation strategies, which make the translated works difficult for their readers to understand or cause great loss of cultural elements, and therefore hinder the dissemination of the Chinese classics. In light of this,to find a more feasible translation theory as guiding ideology and enhance the cross-cultural communication capacity of translations becomes an important measure of resolving the dilemma of Chinese classics.Translator ethics of Anthony Pym is an important breakthrough in translation theories. He abandoned the traditional binary opposition in translation theories, and put forward a new opinion that the primary duty of translators is to ensure his translation be cooperative in cross-cultural exchanges.Currently, researches that specifically apply Pym's translator ethics in translation appraisal are still rather limited. Therefore, this theory is of great feasibility and value in guiding translators and improve cross-cultural communication ability of their translations. This thesis chose The Three Word Primer, the latest translation of Chinese classic San-zi-jing1 as the research object and discussed its translation motivations, aims, and strategies, etc.from the perspective of Pym's translator ethics,to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the translation and draw empirical experience. The research result shows that the overall quality of this translated version is good, containing both excellent and unsatisfactory parts. The study also found the translator Zhao Yanchun adopted the strategy of fixing word number and rhyme pattern, which becomes s a double-edged sword:on the one hand,it contributed to the production of some excellent translations;on the other hand,it increased the challenges in translation, resulting in some serious loss of information in the translation, even ending up with communicative failures in some cases. The study also proves that the application of Pym's translator ethics to translation evaluation is conductive to enhancing the cross-cultural communication competence of translated works and helping translators to make breakthrough in disseminating Chinese classics.
