A Translation Report On On Translator Ethics(Chapter 3)

This is an English-Chinese translation practice report on On Translator Ethics written by Anthony Pym who is a well-known translation theorist in Australia.The book is divided into seven chapters and translated by three students in teamwork.The translator is responsible for Chapter three of the translation task.In this book,Pym proposed the concept of intercultural space,introduced the multiple identities of translators,redefined the translator’s status,and provided a new idea for the study of translation ethics from the perspective of the interculturality of translators.In China,under the vigorous advocacy of well-known theorists such as Xu Jun,Lu Jun and Sun Zhili,the studies on translation ethics have developed rapidly since the21 st century.However,China’s exploration and research on translation theories started relatively late,especially in the study of translation ethics.Translating this book can not only provide referential materials for the translation learner,but also the translator herself can have a deeper understanding of western novel translation theories.This book is an academic monograph that focuses on conveying information and reflecting objective facts considering audience acceptance,which belongs to informative text according to Newmark’s Text Typology theory.Thus,in the process of translation practice,the translator used Text Typology theory as a theoretical guide,and adopted communicative translation as the primary strategy and supplemented with semantic translation.This report mainly focuses on the difficulties encountered in the translation process from the four levels of lexis,syntax,text and culture,and draws on various translation skills such as semantic extension,division and cohesion to resolve the difficulties in order to achieve the desirable translation effect.Through this translation practice and report writing,the translator has gained more profound understandings of translation theories and methods,and her translation skills have been improved.At the same time,it made the translator aware of her shortcomings which informed the future efforts direction of translation studies.
