Joseph Edkins was a London missionary in the 19th century and one of the most influential sinologists in Britain.The object of this study is Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language.It is a primary textbook of Spoken Chinese specially written for western Chinese beginners in China during his mission in China.It has strong practicability and was published in Shanghai at the beginning of 1862.In addition,a german-language version of Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language has been published in Germany.In this paper,the fourth edition is mainly used as the base of the research,the literature research method,comparative method,statistical method,translation method and other methods,to investigate the book’s language elements and the way of arrangement,this textbook for a more comprehensive analysisThe first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the research object,research significance,research method of this paper and the research status of Joseph Edkins and Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language at home and abroadThe second chapter introduces Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language as a whole.First,it introduces the author’s life and his language view.Then all the versions,main contents and applicable objects of Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language are briefly introducedThe third chapter analyzes the language elements of Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language,including pronunciation and vocabulary.The phonetic part analyzes the initials,finals and intonation used in the book,and then compares it with the phonetic scheme used in the book,analyzes the characteristics of the phonetic scheme,and evaluates it.The lexical part analyzes the lexical quantity and the lexical composition,and makes a horizontal comparison with the elementary level of-Chinese to illustrate the wide influence of the progressive course of spoken Chinese,and finally evaluates the vocabulary of the progressive course of spoken ChineseThe fourth chapter analyzes the aRrangement of Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language,and analyzes the arrangement of the text and the short sentences of common words from the aspects of the whole and specific language units,and then according to the "five" principle put forward by the Liu Xun examines the writing of the book,the last of the spoken Chinese progressive teaching material layout is evaluated.Progressive Lessons in the Chinese spoken Language is an entry level spoken language instruction book,the content is practical,the arrangement step by step,from simple to difficult,at that time has the big market demand,occupies a place in the world Chinese education history,is a valuable spoken Chinese teaching material.
