Established in 1973,Renditions is a literary magazine on Chinese literature in English translation serving as a gateway to Chinese culture. The journal covers over two thousand years of Chinese literature, involving novels, dramas, poems, essays, and critiques. Most of the published works are modern and contemporary Chinese literature.Renditions has won the recognition of domestic and foreign scholars and ordinary readers with its high-quality translation, and has made important contributions to the translation of modern and contemporary Chinese literature.Up to now,by reviewing the history the Renditions and comparing it with similar magazines,Chinese scholars have analyzed and summarized the features of its translation model, contributors and translation strategy. Some studies have pointed out that the translated works published in the Renditions are added with paratexts such as footnotes, illustrations and introductions, which is also called "thick translation".But so far, there has been little research focusing on the "thick translation" of the modern and contemporary Chinese literary works in the Renditions. Therefore, this paper selects 15 issues of the Renditions for text analysis, and discusses the following questions:What are the manifestations of the "thick translation" in the modern and contemporary Chinese literary works in the Renditions? What are the causes of the"thick translation" phenomenon? This thesis adopts the methods of paratext analysis and literature research to figure out the types of paratexts added by the translators and analyze their respective functions.Secondly, this paper reviews the founding history and translation model of the Renditions and analyzes the causes of its "thick translation" phenomenon. The thesis found that the Renditions achieved thick translation by adding footnotes, illustrations and translator's introduction to the target text. The close analysis indicates that the reasons for the journal to apply thick translation strategy include its founding background, operation model and the cultural identity of its translators.
