This thesis is a report on the translation of Confusion of Civilization: the Way Out for Tibetan Education(Excerpt)which is written by Badeng Nima,a scholar in education. It is a work on the situation and development of education in the Tibetan areas of China and a monograph on the study of Tibetan culture.Badeng Nima, who was born in the Tibetan area, comprehensively and deeply analyzes the development of education in the Tibetan areas by his own experiences from the perspectives of region, culture and economy. This work will help foreign readers understand the education development and culture in the Tibetan areas of China, promote Chinese culture to go to the world, and make it well-known to foreigners. The material for translation is taken from Chapter Five and Chapter Six in Confusion of Civilization: the Way Out for Tibetan Education. There are a total number of 15,000 Chinese characters in the excerpt.Having read and studied the original text, the translator finds that it consists of some language features which are also the difficulties in translation. The first one is that there are many terms about Tibetan culture and terminologies of educational science, which requires the translator cautiously look up the terms, and get to know the meanings of those terms and terminologies so as to make translation accurate. The second feature is that there are many long and complicated sentences, which requires the translator to carefully analyze the sentence structures and understand the meanings, and choose suitable translation strategies and methods to translate those long and complicated sentences in order to express information naturally. In addition,Chinese is a parataxis language in which logical relations between sentences and paragraphs may not be presented explicitly by functional words. This requires that the translator should be more careful about figuring out the relations between sentences and between paragraphs, and should pay attention to textual coherence. After analyzing the source text and translation theories, the translator chooses Skopos Theory proposed by Hans Vermeer to guide this translation project and to help deal with those translation difficulties.Skopos Theory proposes three rules, namely skopos rule, coherence rule, and fidelity rule. The author aims to introduce the development of education in the Tibetan areas of China. For this reason, the translation should be faithful and coherent so as to make target readers understand the information from original text.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the translator at first identifies the purpose of this translation and its target readers. Then, the translator translates the source text by choosing appropriate methods such as literal translation, free translation, amplification and omission to make the translator not only understand the situation of education in the Tibetan areas but also know the connotation of the Tibetan culture. This report introduces the translation project and translation process, analyzes translation cases under the guidance of the theory and summarizes experience during translation.
