Supported by the theories of Semiotics and Ideology and by analyzing the antagonist: Loki in the film Thor, this thesis aims to argue that the construction of the antagonist is a comprehensive process, which is mainly from three aspects: the outer image, the narrative structure and the ideological features.Loki, the God of lies and hoaxes in the Norse mythology,is the brother of Odin: the widely revered God.In the comic books,he is a super antagonist. In the films,he is more shaped as a child spoilt by his parents and brother than a total villain. In Thor: Ragnar?k,in order to protect his homeland and people,he defeats the Godness of Death,Hela with Thor.In Marvel and other American superhero films, there are various antagonists,of whom Loki is a typical representative. From semiotics aspect, appearance, clothes and equipment are the visual symbols of this character. Moreover, the deeper cultural meaning sets behind Loki's visual image. In superhero films, those superheroes,as protagonists, are important carriers of American mainstream thoughts and ideas, discursive power as well as its ideology, which are the opposite standpoint of antagonists. Therefore, the construction of an antagonist's image is also a comprehensive process. In order to interpret the film better,it is also necessary to interpret the construction process of antagonists. The author will analyse this process from three parts. In the first part, the author will analyse the construction of Loki's outer image from the perspective of Semiotics, containing the character, the actor and the filming technologies. In the second part, the author will analyse the creation of Loki's image from the narrative aspect. In the third part, the author will analyse cultural meanings and ideologies lying behind Loki's image.
