Though Johannes Brahms is a German romantic composer in the 19th-century,the critics often regard him as a traditionalist,and the last master of classicism among Germany and Austria.This is related to his innovative style of music in the age of romantic music,which is,basing on tradition and returning to the past.But people usually highlight too much on his aspects which appear traditional and ignore his musical innovation.This essay aims to study the use of variation techniques in Brahms's three piano sonatas,then further explores his inheritance and development of classical piano sonata,using his early three piano sonatas as examples.This essay is divided into four chapters,namely overview of the works,three piano sonatas,etc.The introduction is divided into three parts,which are the reasons and bases of selecting the thesis,the research status at home and abroad,research methods and innovations.The first chapter outlines the life of Brahms and the background of the three piano sonatas.The second chapter introduces Brahms's three piano sonatas,discussing the creative characteristics of these three piano sonatas from three aspects:different stages of the piano works of Brahms,the composition of sonata in the age of romanticism and the discussion of these three piano sonatas.The third chapter is about the variation technique,mainly discusses the inheritance and development of the Brahms's variation technique and reflects to the prototype of the developing variations from the aspects of theme construction of the Brahms Piano Sonata,the variational movements and the relationships between the variational movements,in combination with Brahms works.At last,the fourth chapter summarizes the characteristics of piano music style of Brahms in combination with the musical criticism.Brahms has an important role of inheritance and development in the history of music.This essay will specifically explore how Brahms inherits and develops by comparing the music examples,basing on literatures,taking Brahms's three piano sonatas as examples,focusing on the variation technique and combining with the comparison of classical composer represented by Beethoven and romantic music composer represented by Liszt.
