Abstract/Summary:
Multimodal discourse analysis has gradually become one of the hot topics in the field of linguistics study in the 1990 s,which signifies that discourse analysis has entered into a new stage of comprehensive analysis instead of pure text analysis. In recent years,as information technology and multimedia have made great progress, traditional way of discourse study cannot analyze discourses comprehensively and systematically. Therefore, multimodal discourse has been an important way of discourse analysis. As is known to all, poetry moralization is an indispensable part of children’s education.Unlike ordinary discourse,Chinese version of English children’s poetry consists of texts, images and other social symbols to express meaning and reflects the poetry’s cultural connotations and aesthetic features. However, the current situation of English children poetry and its audience is not satisfying. Therefore, this paper expounds the studies of Chinese translation of English children poetry at home and abroad to get a rough idea of the research development, and analyze Chinese versions of A Child’s Garden of Verses written by Robert Stevenson from the perspective of the multimodal discourse analysis to look for solutions for the problems of English children’s poetry translation. It goes beyond text analysis based on Zhang Delu’s integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis to explain how Chinese versions of English children’s poetry make use of three modes: pictures, words and sounds from four levels: cultural level, contextual level, content level and expressional level,so as to achieve the aim of promoting the English children poetry. As the research shows, first of all, both English children’s poetry and its translation have multimodal features.Besides, illustrations have a great impact on translation versions.Generally speaking, illustration interacts with poetry translation versions in three aspects, namely, interactions shown by image, content,as well as emotion expression. In addition, from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, translators may improve the translation quality of English children’s poetry at cultural, contextual, content and expressional level.
