| English reading comprehension accounts for a large part in English exams all the time.Continuous improvements and adjustments,therefore,are making in English reading teaching in order to achieve the teaching goals.However,many students are still weary of a lot of information covered in the text.This feeling will be around them whenever they are in reading class,doing reading exercises or taking an English exam.Moreover,many old teachers only use one method to teach reading.What’s worse,some teachers just translate every word and sentence and then explain some key points.Students may lose the initiative and interest in English reading for a long time.Although many English teachers strive to solve these problems,it is still not so encouraging.Mind Map,as a tool for organizing information,is widely applied to all fields.Many great achievements are also made in subjects teaching.Therefore,the study applying Mind Map to English reading teaching aims to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement.There are 96 students in Grade 8 participating in the study.After the experiment,the study want to find out,(1)Can the application of Mind Map improve reading comprehension achievement of students in junior high school?(2)In which aspects do the students make the greatest improvement,getting the main idea,understanding the specific information,judging the author’s attitude,guessing the meaning of word and phrase,or making inferences?(3)Can the application of Mind Map to English reading improve students’ reading speed? The study adopts one instrument: test papers of reading comprehension.Reading comprehension test is selected from the students’ English newspapers.And data were organized by SPSS and analyzed by Descriptive Statistics,Independent Samples Test,Paired Samples Test and ANOVA.The study gets the conclusions as follows:First,Mind Map does not help students with overall reading comprehension greatly.Second,among the five aspects of reading comprehension,getting the main idea and finding specific information are improved most.Third,the Mind Map is not conducive to improving reading speed.However,there are some limitations to the study.The size of the subjects is a little small.The experimental time is too short.Other types of passages are not involved.Thus,for further study,more subjects should be involved,more time should be spent,more types of passages should be included and the passages and questions in the experiment should be stricter. |
