This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice and a translation report based on this practice. Moreover, the original text of the translation practice is taken from Implementing New York's Civil Voir Dire Law and Rules, which is published byNew York Court in January,2009.During the process of the translation, the author of this thesis adopts the new translations initiated or advocated by Professor Hu Zhaoyun for "jury","juror","verdict","court","judge"and"state",which are“???”,“???","??","??"???”and“?”respectively.Guided by Newmark's text type theory, this translation practice aims at advancing the Chinese translation of the relevant literature of the American jury system and offering a case study for improving the translation quality of legal texts.According to the function and content of text,Newmark divides text intoexpressive text, informative text and vocative text respectively. So,different text types require different translation methods. The source text chosen in this translation practice is a legal text, and according to Newmark's classification criteria, the legal text selected in this practice is an informative text For informative texts,Newmark suggests communicative translation as the main strategy supplemented by semantic translation strategies. As an informative text,a legal text is supposed to explain the concept of law and state the legal opinions in a precise way.At the lexical level, the English legal text contains a great number of common words, fuzzy words and old English words. At the syntactical level,a legal text contains a large number of simple and compound long sentences as well as passive sentences. Therefore, the legal translation must follow the principles of accuracy, identity, refinement, solemnity aqd??language standardization.Based on Newmark's text type theory and his semantic translation strategy and communicative translation strategy, this thesis analyzes the difficulties encountered in the implementation of this translation project and the translation strategies adopted from two aspects of lexical and syntax,so as to explore the translation strategies that should be used to guide the author in translating such legal texts. Therefore,in dealing with specific problems, the author adopts the semantic translation strategy, the communicative translation strategy,as well as literal translation strategy under the guidance of Newmark's text type theory. The author adopts "professional matching method","contextual reasoning method",and"division"in the translation of common words with special meaning, fuzzy words and old English words. For the common simple long sentences, compound long sentences and passive sentences in legal texts, the author adopts translation strategies such as"s mooth translation","splitting method"and"voice conversion method”respectively. However, the difficulties of legal translation are reflected in the professionalism of the text, rigorous use of words, complex sentence structure, etc. Therefore,in the translation of such specialized texts,it is necessary to use specific translation theories for macro guidance for choosing the corresponding translation strategies. To sum up,Newmark's text type theory and his communicative translation theory and semantic translation theory guide the author's translation practice, and ensure the smooth completion of the translation practice.
