Variations is one of the most important forms of Beethoven’s keyboard work in addition to his thirty-two piano sonatas,which includes twenty-one independent piano variations,five piano sonatas,variations,and fantasies,etc.Although Beethoven’s variations are not as popular as the "Thirty-Two Piano Sonatas" among people,the way he creating it,the source of the theme and all the creative treatments he used,make it a unique and charming piece of artwork.Starting with concept of the variations and the classification of techniques used in variations,this essay introduces Beethoven’s Variations in details.It discusses the selection of the theme,the techniques used and application of them through his early,middle and late stage of his career of art.By applying Beethoven’s character of “eroica image “this essay analysis Eroica Variations,Op.35 as an example in terms of its background,the structure,the treatment and its presentation,and its emotional expression in details.Further more,the essay talks about the importance and application of all the points mentioned above in practical performance.
