| This is a report on a translation project done by the author, whose source text is the Court Opinion of Gertz v.Robert Welch,Inc.,a milestone case in American law about freedom of speech and the press, which also established a new rule of law for follow-up cases about the freedom of speech and the crime of libel. This translation report describes the translation process to show how the quality has been controlled in the translation project, analyzes the significance of both the project and the report, and elaborates on two typical problems encountered in the translation process: the translation of lexical gaps and of pronouns. This report explains in detail how different translation methods have been employed to solve these problems. For the tackling of the issue of lexical gaps, the methods of literal translation, free translation and transliteration have been used, and for the translation of pronouns, the methods of retention, conversion and omission have been used. The methods proposed in this report can provide references for other translators and help them improve the quality of translation. |
