This article is a translation report whose source text is the Unites States Supreme Court‘s Opinion on Hall v.Florida written by Associate Justice Anthony McLeod Kennedy.The judicial opinion illustrates an important judgment related to death penalty.Reading through this judicial opinion,readers are expected to comprehend the judgment logic of Justice Kennedy and the spirit of the United States Constitution.This translation report firstly introduces the background of the source text and its writer,emphasizes the substantial significance of translating American judicial opinions into Chinese and elaborates the methods that the translator applies in the process of translation quality control.Based on Skopos Theory,this translation report further discusses the duty of translators and the purpose of the writer and concludes the language features of the judicial opinion as a kind of legal document.Translation strategies suitable for the translation of this kind of text are therefore formed.Based on case studies,in order to solve difficulties encountered in the translation process,the report concludes translation techniques applied in this translation practice and further illustrates the power of Skopos Theory.
