The source text of the translation project is excerpted from the second chapter of Reading Zoos:Representations of Animals and Captivity written by Randy Malamud,a professor at Georgia State University.Published in 1998,this book is an ecocriticism monograph on zoo animals in literature and a masterpiece in the field of animal ethics and morality. The project is constituted of two parts:the first part consists of the selected source text with about 12000 English words and the translated text with about 26000 Chinese characters. The second part is a critical commentary on this translation practice.Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment. In this book, the author employs ecocriticism as the principal methodology to read the relationship between human beings and captive animals. In the second chapter titled "Exhibiting Imperialism",the author reconstructs zoo history historically and politically, uncovering fairly close relationship between zoos and imperialism, criticizing human's ruthless exploitation of animal and trying to arouse the awareness of animal protection. The translation project aims to provide a brand new angel that extends research scope of ecocriticism from the earlier focus on the relationship between human and nature to the new focus on the relationship between humans and animals.Furthermore, since the ecological environment in China is increasingly deteriorating,China urgently needs a large number of introductions of European and American ecocriticism theory and literary works to enrich our theoretic system and render Chinese people to pay attention to the ecological problems. Therefore, the completion of the project can provide material for the domestic development of ecocriticism and reference for those who are interested in ecocriticism. Finally, this translation report can provide reference for the translation strategies and methods of the same text type. This translation report is constituted of four sections. The first section is the introduction. In the second section,Peter Newmark's Translation Typology and Communicative Translation are introduced in details. The third section illustrates how the translator adopts communicative translation to guide the translation practice. The analysis at lexical level and syntactic level proves that methods like semantic extension, conversion, reinventing sentence structure, turning phrases into clause can reach effects of conveying the meaning of the author and realize effective communication. The fourth section is a conclusion of this translation project.
