Selected E-C Translation Of Railways In The Landscape:How They Transformed The Face Of Britain(Chapter 1 And Chapter 2) And A Critical Commentary

This thesis is composed of two parts.The first part consists of the selected text and its Chinese translation and the second part is the corresponding critical commentary.The source text is excerpted from Railways in the landscape: How they transformed the face of Britain,whose author is Gordon Biddle,a vice-president of the Railway and Canal Historical Society.The selected text comprises two chapters: Chapter One“Transforming the Rural Scene” and Chapter Two “Country Stations and Buildings”.These two chapters introduce how the growth of railways brought about physical changes to the countries in Britain and three development phases of British country railway stations and buildings.The source text belongs to informative text and has its own characteristics.There are abundant technical terms,proper nouns and long sentences in the selected text.As informative texts aim to convey faithful and intact messages to readers,qualified translations of them should achieve the same effect as the source texts do.To do this,the translation project is conducted under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence.Meanwhile,some translation methods under this theory are adopted in the project,such as addition,splitting,semantic explication as well as division and reinvention.In the critical commentary,several of the methods are discussed with some typical examples on three levels: lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.The project will be of great significance on two aspects.First,it is hoped that this translation project can be very useful for the Chinese readers who are interested in learning the development of British railways and their influence on the landscape.Second,some translation techniques employed in the translation process are summarized in the critical commentary in hoping to be retained for future reference to the similar translation.
