This translation project mainly includes the original text, the translated text and the translation report. The original text is excerpted from the first chapter of Understanding William Gibson, published by the University of South Carolina Press in 2016.This book consists of 168 pages and 6 chapters, mainly introducing the "father of cyberpunk"William Gibson and his profound influences on postmodern literature, especially fiction. The first chapter of this book mainly contains a brief chronology of Gibson's life, aesthetic values of his works, the rise of cyberpunk, and an introduction to postmodernism. As the author Miller mentioned in the preface, this book functions as an introduction book, the target readers of which are students as well as nonacademic readers who are interested in William Gibson and cyberpunk. The original text possesses certain social value as well as academic value. With the unceasing development of technology, artificial intelligence has been applied in various fields. On the one hand,it does make life easier for human beings. On the other hand, people are worried about it for it may bring forth negative impacts. And works of William Gibson and other cyberpunk writers can help us reconsider this question from a distinct point of view.Based on the translated text, the translation report analyses the difficulties the translator has encountered in the translation process and summarizes solutions at both the lexical and syntactic level.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the translator applies various stategies to achieve the Skopos rule, the Coherence rule, and the Fidelity rule.As a conclusion of the translation practice, this translation report may be helpful in the study of science fiction and provide the Chinese readers with a distinctive angle to know science fiction and artificial intelligence.
