At the very beginning of The Analects of Confucius,it says:"Is it pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?""Learning",one of the most significant concepts in The Analects of Confucius,is an essence in Confucius' philosophy. The systematic views about the objective, connotation, attitude and methods of learning have been developed through the dialogues and monologues of Confucius and his disciples in The Analects, which builds a foundation for the universally acknowledged interpretation of "learning" in the Pre-Qin Confucianism.First of all, generally speaking,in The Analects of Confucius, the aim of "learning" is discussed from three different perspectives:The first one is the aim of acquiring knowledge, that is,to pursue deeper cultural understanding,to develop practical skills in daily life and eventually to become a talent through learning. The second one is about its ethical objective, which asks scholars to strengthen their moral cultivation through learning and make great efforts to become gentlemen. Finally, the terminal aim of learning is not only about what you get but also what responsibility you could assume for the country and even the whole society. It is frequently represented in a political way.As the saying from ancient China goes,he who excels in learning can be an official. It is worth noting that the ethical aim takes priority in three different aspects and the achievement of perfect morality could be expounded as the fundamental view of The Analects and Pre-Qin Confucianism about learning.Secondly,in correspondence with objectives of "learning",its contents in The Analects of Confucius could be interpreted at various levels as well.To be specific,"learning" basic cultural knowledge should be put first and foremost, including Six Classics and some practical skills about literature and art.Furthermore,it is crucial to learn rites and music in daily life,to grasp their essence and finally to comprehend morals, ethics and the natural law.In addition,as the contents of "learning" are divided into different levels, its value could also be classified given their disparate importance. The Analects of Confucius puts great emphasis on the learning of morality and kindness instead of the theory.Only when one has exceptional performance in his morality and personality can he achieve the ambition of cultivating his own character, taking care of others and managing state affairs. At last,The Analects also touches on principles and methods of"learning" and the attitude towards it.Confucius instructs his students not only to keep diligent and insatiable in learning but also to learn from people who keep you accompany. When it comes to the methods of“learning",Confucius stresses on its combination with thinking and practice progressively. All of these attitudes, principles and methods are beneficial to learners.Mencius and Xuncius further develop the basic ideas of "learning"in The Analects of Confucius. They value the learning of knowledge about kindness and morality and hold the view that learning is the way to achieve moral cultivation, which has profound impacts on the development of Confucianism. There are plenty of problems in learning nowadays. An increasing number of people take advantage of learning to get realistic benefits and interests with the negative ideas of utilitarianism.Undoubtedly, the discussion of "learning" in of Confucius is instructive to resolve these problems and to reconstruct a learning-oriented society in a new era.
