As the earliest Western missionaries brought into China by a group of missionaries,"The pilgrim's progress" was translated by a group of missionaries as the Scottish Presbyterian Consul William Chalmers Burns, the The London Missionary Society John Wallace Wilson and the British Wesleyan Methodist Church George Piercy.During the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, the work was translated several times, which had became a major Western literary work in the early history of cultural exchanges between China and the West.John Bunyan recorded the journey of the Christians in searching for the heavens, which also been described as a picture of humanity seeking truth of soul.Through the study of the localization process of the " The pilgrim's progress”,one can glimpse the collision and integration of Chinese and Western cultures from the 19th to the 20th centuries, analyze the localization development strategies of heterogeneous cultures, and provide ideas for the teaching and promotion model of international Chinese education. The first chapter of this article describes "The pilgrim's progress" and its author,John Bunyan, and introduces Bunyan's history of writing. The social and cultural background of the translation of "The pilgrim's progress",and emphasizes the meaning of "localization" has all been emphasized. The core part of this article is mainly in Chapters 2 and 3.In Chapter 2,we have compiled translations of the "The pilgrim's progress" in China, including versions that appear in different vertical and horizontal directions,as translated versions of dialects in multiple regions. Then we focused on the analysis of William Chalmers Burns, the most influential translation book around that time and even in later generations, which conducted an analysis of the language, style, rhetoric, and culture of "The pilgrim's progress" by the method of naturalization translation. In the third chapter,we will start with the localization of the images of the The pilgrim's progress, compare the composition of illustrations, lines, characters, and intentions of multiple versions, and analyze the reasons for their formation.Through the two angles of language and image,we explored the uniqueness of the The pilgrim's progress in the strategy of heterogeneous cultural exchanges and fusions, and explored the embodiment of the Christian culture that the missionaries promoted. Finally, the paper also combined with the current new media technology, expounded the inspiration of the localization of the The pilgrim's progress for the promotion of international Chinese education.
