European operas began in the late 16 th and early 17 th century with the secularization of the Renaissance musical culture. The various vocal roles in the opera, with its different sound colors, create many vivid opera characters. As a major part of vocal music, the development of mezzo-sopranos has experienced a bumpy road. Before the 17 th century, the role of mezzo-soprano in European operas was always in a secondary position that was not taken seriously. In the middle of the 17 th century, the mezzo-soprano began to perform singing in the part of the aria of the oratorio. After that, the mezzo-soprano,the vocal part of the mezzo-soprano,gradually took the role of the female protagonist on the edge of the stage. As the composers pay attention to the mezzo-soprano and the level of performance of the mezzo-soprano singers themselves has increased, the artistic image of the mezzo-sopranos in the opera has also become more and more. The opera composers Rossini and Grouk have custom-made many classic arias for women's mid-range musicians, pushing the mezzo-soprano voice to an unprecedented height and becoming the “female number one” in the opera. The rich voice performance of the mezzo-sopranos left a vivid classic image on the opera stage. The study found that domestic research topics on mezzo-soprano character images are not comprehensive and in-depth,and most of them are analysis of arias in one of the two operas. The thesis will explore the evolution of the role of the mezzo-soprano in European opera, and explore the aspects of the age, role identity, character and timbre of the mezzo-soprano characters,as well as the aesthetic value of such voices.
