During the time of Republican China,science is underdeveloped in China and most people are illiterate.In this conditions some ambitious intellectuals in college such as Sun Mingjing,Wei Xueren decided to ues film which was a new invention in that period to teach students.Nanking university’s Film education started in 1930 and had a basic development in the next years.After 20 years,the science college of Nanking University had made great achievements in research,teaching,social service,international communication.The early leader was Wei Xueren,next was Sun Mingjing.In that time,Nanking University could’t develop film education without government’s help,especially in fund.In fact,the Film Department of the Faculty of Science did not exclude the support of the government from the outset.The development of film education in Nanking University reflected the cooperation and interaction between academia and politics.There were intellectuals who actively participated in the official audio-visual education and there was also official support for the Nanking University’s education.There was actually a consensus between the government and film department,which was to use films and broadcast to assist the development of Chinese education,to cultivate qualified citizens with modern awareness,and to arouse the people’s national consciousness and national identity.Specifically,the Film Department maintained close cooperation with the Education Bureau of Nanking,the China Educational Film Association,and the Ministry of Education of the National Government on film education(audio-visual education)for several years.In the period of the Anti-Japanese War,this kind of cooperation or interaction became even closer.In the rear area,filmmakers devoted their professional knowledge outside the school to participate in the cause of the War of Resistance against Japanese,and made great contributions to the nation.What is most worth mentioning is that at that time,filmmakers were not constrained by the actual environment.They always thought about how to catch up with the international frontiers and how to innovate teaching and research.The creation of "Film and Broadcasting" was the best proof.The dream of "saving the country with film" came out at the time of national crisis.Gradually on the right track,it tended to be specialized and disciplinary,exploring academics,cultivating talents,and paying attention to the frontiers.However,this kind of dream had not been realized for various reasons until the arrival of the change in 1949.It had to be said that it was a historical regret.Objectively speaking,the video and audio education at Nanking University was first class in China in 1948,but there was still a big gap with the United States.Film education at the time in China did not form a clear discipline,compared with mature subjects,still young.In 1952,after the adjustment of higher education,Nanking University’s audio-visual discipline as a whole joined the Peking Film School.This was a great loss to Nanjing University.In short,although Nanking University was best known for its agri-forestry school,the school’s film education was absolutely a feature of teaching and research.In the 20-year development history of the film department,difficulties in funding,unrest in the current situation,and lack of students had brought many challenges to film workers.Those were also general Portrait of China’s education at that time,which showed how difficult it was to teach in weak countries.Furthermore,the recognition and attention paid by the Chinese people to films and radios during the Republic of China was far from enough.This was a conceptual challenge.Under many difficulties,Nanking University had been able to insist on the development of audio-visual education until 1952.It cannot but be said that it was a miracle.Looking back on the past,Nanking University’s film workers represented by Sun Mingjing combined the ambitions of saving the country with the academic aspirations of individuals and paid attention to giving play to the central role of people in the utility of tools.They payed attention to the combination of scientific research and teaching,interaction within and outside the school,cooperation between theory and practice,adapting to the needs of the times,and upholding academic style.Film or Internet,it is a technology,a tool,a medium,and they can never replace people or drive people.The continuous exploration of Sun Mingjing and others showed that we should pay attention to the cultivation of talents in the education process,especially the cultivation of teachers.The research on film education can not only make up for the lack of research in the history of Nanking University,but also complement the history of modern Chinese film education.An academic institution may become an important window for observing the complex relationship between government and the university,academics and politics.In terms of practical value,many texts produced by Nanking University’s film education history and its accumulated experience are precious resources that can be borrowed from today’s film historiography.
