From Wuchang Uprising To The Peace Talk Between South And North

This paper concentrates on the international relations between Japan,the United Kingdom and China,mainly between Japan and the United Kingdom.Through examining that Japan trying to interfere the Revolution of 1911 while competing with Britain in Wuchang Uprising,Yuan Shih-kai's coming back to power and the Peace Talk between South and North from October 1911 to March 1912 at the beginning of the Revolution of 1911,we can get a better knowledge of the coordination and competition between Japan and the United Kingdom.We can also know better about the process of Japan's decision-making.After the outbreak of the Wuchang Uprising,Japan and the United Kingdom first adopted a neutral non-intervention policy in coordination with the consular corps in China.But Japan and the United Kingdom also had their own policies on the Wuchang Uprising and the revolutionary army.The British initial policy changed from the attempt to send troops to maintain a neutral non-intervention policy while Japan's initial policy changed from the temporary hesitation to send troops to intervene the revolution.This exposes Japan's competition with the United Kingdom in China.But Japan also tended to coordinate with the United Kingdom in its action.With the power of the revolutionary forces continuing to grow,the Qing government invited Yuan Shih-kai to suppress the revolution.Yuan Shih-kai had very deep historical origins with both Japan and the United Kingdom.The relationship with Yuan Shih-kai played an important role in the decision-making of Japan and the United Kingdom's policy of China during this period.Out of the same interests,Yuan Shih-kai tended to be friends with the United Kingdom while suspect Japan.In this case,Japan decided to split the north and south to compete with the United Kingdom to ensure that Japan occupies a dominant position.This attempt went broke in the trend of the compromise between the south and north and under the contain of the United Kingdom.So Japan had to try to coordinate with the United Kingdom and build trust with Yuan Shih-kai to build a better relationship.Under the mediation of the United Kingdom,the trend of compromise between the north and south is becoming more and more obvious.Japan has repeatedly proposed to reconcile with the United Kingdom to intervene the peace talk between the north and south.But the requests were all rejected by the United Kingdom.Until the opening of the North and South Conference took place,Japan and the United Kingdom had difference opinion in the issue of what form of government China should carry out.Japan strongly persuaded the United Kingdom to support the republic instead of the constitutional monarchy as well as coordinating with Yuan Shih-kai and the South revolutionaries,which all ended in failure.In the end,Japan has made a decision to act in concert with the United Kingdom in a situation where the republic has become more and more popular.Overall,at the beginning of the Revolution of 1911,Japan thought it was an excellent opportunity to expand its rights and interests in China and it did make an attempt to interfere with the Revolution of 1911 and compete with the United Kingdom.However,due to the prevailing position of the United Kingdom in China at that time,the development of China's situation is detrimental to Japan.In the process of competing with the United Kingdom Japan also had to seek the coordination with the United Kingdom.This is the result of why Japan took the policy of both the coordination and the competition with the United Kingdom in this period.
