Since the Reform and Opening-up in China, exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and foreign cultures have become a current trend in those days.Nowadays, translated literature has become more and more popular in China.Foreign works can be seen everywhere in China and its literary genres have begun to diversify. This is a translation report of chapter one to three of The Man Between written by Amelia Edith Barr, which mainly tells about the tortuous love story between Dora Denning and a poor priest Basil Stanhope. For the translator,as two kinds of different language groups,Chinese and English are quite different in lots of aspects, among which discourse cohesion is a typical example as well. The difficulties the translator encountered during the translation are mainly reflected in the cohesion of lexicon, grammar, dialogue and narration. On the basis of the knowledge the translator has learned, the translator uses the cohesion theory of Halliday and Hassan to guide this translation practice, which points out the respective translation methods for lexical, grammatical, dialogue and narration cohesion. The cohesion theory integrates specific translation methods into translation practices,of which the core concept is that cohesion,as a semantic concept, regards the discourse as a translation unit to establish the semantic connection of each part, thus creating the cohesive relation. Therefore, with torturous plots of novels, different characters, and various narration methods, the cohesion theory plays an importance role in guiding E-C translation of novels.Through this translation practice, the translator has a new understanding of the translation work and Anglo-American religious culture in the 20 th century. At the same time, the translator has not only learnt about literary creation and the function of translators, but also accumulated some valuable experience in literature translation. And the translator has recognized her own limitations during the translation as well, which has given her more enlightenment for the translation practice in the future.
