The author selected a consecutive interpreting session when he was working as an interpreter in the UK as the material of the practice report.In the practice he provided interpreting services to a Chinese governmental group that visited the UK for a training purpose around the topic of the Development of E-Commerce in the UK.The interpreting practice is a representative choice due to its difficulties in the areas of fast speech delivery speed,technical background as well as the speaker's Greek accent which is not mainstream.The combination of the three aspects creates great challenges for the author.After reflection and research,the author proposed three coping strategies for the aforementioned difficulties.They are: quick preparation,omitting and summarization,and inferring.As in real life interpreting cases,interpreters rarely receive the materials early before the session and the preparation time is always limited.Thus,it is necessary to have a set of preparation strategies so as to effectively familiarize oneself with the background of the session to achieve better interpreting performances.For this part,the author discussed at two levels – linguistic and extralinguistic and proposed relevant solutions.The strategy of omitting and summarization is also an effect approach to address the combination of influencing factors especially for fast speech speed,in which omission can be further divided into omission of unimportant information and omission of uncertain information.Last but not least,inferring can be adopted as a back-up plan when the above two fail.By exploring the strategies,the author has a deep understanding of Daniel Gile's Effort Models and Comprehension Equation and hopes that the solutions could be of some help to fellow interpreters.
