A Report On The C-E Translation Of Electronic Information Patent Specifications

As the economic globalization develops rapidly and China’s reform and opening up deepens continuously,Chinese enterprises recognize the importance of owning intellectual property rights,and more and more Chinese enterprises apply for patents from developed countries such as Europe and the United States.Therefore,the market demands for patent specifications translation,especially the C-E translation of patent specifications,has shown a significant upward trend.The patent specification is an important part of the patent application documents,so the high-quality patent specifications translation is crucial for the examination and approval of the applicant’s patent application and the protection of the rights.That is why patent specifications translation has aroused more and more attention from the academic community.However,there are few studies on the C-E translation of electronic information patent specifications.The author believes that the research of patent specifications translation in this area not only helps to transfer domestic advanced technology to foreign countries,but also provides reference for researchers engaged in the related fields.In the process of translating,the author,using the methods of case study,literature research and empirical summary,analyzes and solves the problems at the lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic levels in the translation of electronic information patent instructions under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory.Combining with the translation methods the author learned and her own translation practice,the author summarizes the following common translation methods:literal translation,conversion,modeling translation,active-passive voice conversion,reference translation,adding conjunctions and other translation methods.The author chooses two electronic information patent specifications translated by herself tocomplete this practical report,which consists of five parts.In the first chapter,the background,characteristics and requirements of the translation task are introduced.In the second chapter,three stages of the translation are described,which are Pre-translation,In-translation and Post-translation.In the third chapter,Nida’s functional equivalence theory is summarized.In the fourth chapter,the case study is presented,in which the author analyzes the problems encountered in translation practice from lexical,syntactic,discourse and stylistic aspects,including the translation of technical words,common words and formulaic expressions,the translation of non-subject sentences,long sentences and formulaic sentences,logical cohesion,and stylistic requirements,and summarizes the translation methods of literal translation,conversion translation,modeling translation,active and passive voice transformation,combining several sentences into a single sentence,reference translation,reference translation,adding conjunctions,rearranging information,choosing old law words and adjusting structures to achieve the equivalence in each level,which provides references for researchers engaged in relevant specialties.The last chapter is the summary part of the practical report,in which the author summarizes the gains of this translation practice,points out the limitations of the research,and puts forward suggestions for future research.
