Zhu Da(1626-1705),or Bada shanren,Chinese ink painter, was a significant descendant of Ming Dynasty royal family member, but became a depressed hermit after Ming Dynasty. The confusing multiple identities make his works full of ambiguity and difficult to understand. His works have far-reaching connotations. In the eyes of most viewers, they always feel that his paintings are mysterious, full of unfamiliar allusions and concealed references.Because of the exaggerated, strange and grotesque artistic image of his works, this paper proposes that Zhu Da's works have the characteristics of "cartoon",and tries to study Zhu Da's paintings in a new way.Although there was no real concept of "cartoon" in ancient China, this paper explores the definition of cartoon concept from a large number of documents. While clarifying the definition and connotation of cartoons, early Chinese traditional paintings which have the characteristics of "cartoon" are traced back to demonstrate the existence of cartoons in ancient China and the development of Chinese cartoon history has its own way.Through reviewing the development of the early ink cartoons, the cartoon language and personal symbols made by Zhu Da are corresponded to the context of history.Zhu Da's work "Peacock Map" was studied to explore and supplement the irony in his works. Then cartoon language was used to explore and analyze that his works have characteristics of "cartoon"(satire, lyricism and narrative spirit). In the end,Zhu Da's ink paintings were extended to a more in-depth level of meaning. The positioning and understanding of Zhu Da's works were reconstructed in three aspects by cartoon perspective: the history of cartoons, the avant-garde spirit of traditional painting, and art acceptance.Through the cartoon performance of Zhu Da's ink works, not only he expressed his will as literati, but his works were twisted. In the paradoxical contradiction, the deep and serious behind the seemingly ridiculous behaviors make people have to think about the complex background of the author. In addition to demonstrating its rationality as a cartoon,it is more important to analyze Zhu Da's works from the perspective of cartoons, try to break through the usual interpretation of Zhu Da's works.Deconstructing the tradition continuity and sociality of the works from a new perspective, the understanding and interpretation of Zhu Da and his works are enriched, and thus to prove that cartoons are not a foreign form of painting, the development of Chinese cartoons has its own way, with its own context and symbolic language.
